Anger Management

What is anger management therapy?

Anger management therapy aims to help individuals better understand and manage their anger. The goal is to help individuals develop healthy ways to express their emotions and communicate their needs, rather than relying on anger or engaging in potentially destructive behaviours that can harm themselves and others.

Who will benefit from anger management therapy?

Anger management therapy can benefit individuals who struggle with controlling their anger or express it in unhealthy ways. There are several signs that may indicate that someone has anger management issues. These include:

  • Frequent or intense feelings of anger and irritability

  • Difficulty controlling anger and act out aggressively such as throwing things, yelling, or becoming physically violent

  • Feeling that their anger affects their relationship, work or daily life

  • Engage in self-destructive behaviours such as substance use or risky sexual behaviour as a way to cope with anger

  • Feeling guilty or remorseful after outbursts of anger

  • Experiencing legal or financial problems stemming from anger-related behaviour

What to expect from sessions?

Together with you, the therapist will guide you to identify the underlying causes and triggers for your anger, and to develop strategies to manage your emotions more effectively. A variety of techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), combined with relaxation techniques, communication skills training, and mindfulness exercises will be helpful for you to be more aware of your emotions, and learn to better control your reactions.
